Choosing Mini PC computer hosts and displays or monitors, we usually need to consider the input and output ports on the computers or motherboards. The connectors between displays and computers are very important to be matched with each other.

The launch time of display ports and connectors.

VGA was released in 1986, with the standard of 15Pin D-Subminiature, this is the oldest display port.

HDMI was designed in 2002; the most commonly and widely used display ports so far in the market.

DP also known as DisplayPort, was designed in 2006, the latest digital display interface, transfers audio, USB and other forms of data. It was designed to replace VGA, DVI (Digital Visual Interface), this is the most compatible display and data carry on interface compared to HDMI and DVI.

HDMI types:

1. Standard HDMI Type A： being used in most computers and display device surfaces, the most widely used type.

2. Dual-Link HDMI Type B: rarely seem.

3. Mini HDMI Type C: most commonly used in cellphones and laptops.

4. Micro HDMI Type D: usually used for Tablets, such as Microsoft Sruface, Motorala Xoom, BlackBerry PlayBook, Vizio Vtab1008 and Acer Iconia Tab A500.

5. Automotive Connection System Type E.

HDMI versions start from HDMI 1.0 to HDMI 2.1, every upgrade new version increases the bandwidth or capabilities of data transmission.

The Applications of VGA HDMI and DP

Some computers are designed with one of or all of these common display ports: VGA, HDMI and DP. The HDMI port is most commonly and widely used in most countries. Some developed countries are more favored to use HDMI and DP ports, while developing countries are more likely to use VGA and HDMI ports.

For POS and digital signage devices, dual or triple display ports are more often needed, for these applications, more than 1 display port are requested.

It is better to choose devices with 1 HDMI and 1 DP port, if still not enough, adding 1 VGA port is possible, for most computer models are designed to be available for such applications.

If the computer output ports don’t have the display ports we need? What should we do?

We could still choose the display transit cable to connect. But need to be adware, some chips on the motherboard may not support, it rarely happens, still need to consider this issue when using the transit cable.

Most transit cables can be used. Such as HDMI to DP transit cable, DP to HDMI transit cable, USB-C to HDMI transit cable etc.
